Procedure Purpose & Overview
Lasers can be used in tooth preparations for dental fillings instead of traditional dental drills.
Lasers remove cavities with an invisible light beam and are very precise. A filling is placed where the cavity is removed by the laser.
In some dental procedures there is often no need to numb the tooth with local anesthesia. Lasers can also kill bacteria in a cavity, which can help in the long-term health of a tooth. Lasers are also a precise way to remove a cavity as it does not remove as much of the healthy tooth as it would in a traditional drill.
Lasers use air, water, and light to treat cavities. The water helps keep the tooth hydrated throughout the procedure which aids in pain reduction. Basically, the use of a laser is much less painful than a drill.
